Composition lecture

Here (from my notes) are things I learned from the lecture on composition:

First off, composition is the "overall organization of elements"
This occurs in many mediums such as art, writing, music, dance, theater, nature, ect.
  The list is endless!
The basic elements of design include point, line, shape/form, color/hue, texture,
  space, and valve/shade.

Through our class activity we discovered things such as rythem, harmony, tention, contrast, emotion, gravity/blance and scale appeared in our representations of the different elements.

I also learned the term gestalt; it is the idea that "the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts,"
meaning we see as a whole rather than disect each thing we experience. This short cut is developed as we learn and we learn through our senses. What an artist has to do is learn about assumptions so they can communicate to the viewer effectively. Otherwise, they may not get the message across.
  The four aspects of gastalt:
     proximity: shows relationship and tention
continuance: leads your eyes in a certain direction
simularity: leads us to short cut and think things relate
closure: gives some information, but not all, so the viewer can complete it
